Pilates is a form of whole body exercise developed by Joseph H. Pilates. It incorporates the use of Pilates equipment and mat exercises to achieve improved core strength, flexibility, and controlled movement. Pilates benefits everyone and every “body.”
Joseph Pilates developed his system of whole body exercise, which he called Contrology, more than 90 years ago. He believed that we should all move well and feel well no matter our age. He stated that if your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old. Conversely, if your spine is flexible at 60, you are young.
Joseph Pilates thought of everything, from the top of your head to your feet. Pilates improves your ability to move with ease because it works on the mobility of every joint and it strengthens and elongates every muscle in your body.
Pilates will not only improve your ability to move with ease, it will improve your muscle tone, your coordination, your balance, and your posture. And yes, it works your core as a strong core is the anchor which allows the rest of your body to move fluidly. Pilates also requires mental focus and concentration which decreases stress. Pilates is taught according to each student's needs and goals.
Pilates is unique because all of the exercises and equipment can be modified for each person’s body, including each person’s strength, weaknesses, injuries, and limitations.
Benefits of Pilates include improved movement, the ability to do the things you love with better movement and less pain, improved flexibility, improved posture, reduced joint pain, and increased strength. As you correct your posture, you put less pressure on your joints. The more flexible you are, the less tense your muscles are. The better you breathe, the more oxygen is sent to all of your muscles. This mind body training results in reduced stress and optimized health.
